Code of Practice – Progressing safety and best practice step by step
Completely revised after extensive consultation and containing a supportive foreword from the Health and Safety Executive, the Ladder Association’s new Code of Practice is intended to give specifiers and users advice on the safe and effective use of portable ladders and steps. New sections in the updated Code include current best practice on how to erect a ladder, stability and footing of a ladder, how best to climb a ladder and the use of roof ladders. Written for use in conjunction with manufacturers’ instructions and guidance, the Code of Practice is divided into 11 sections, as follows:
• Foreword • Introduction • Employer and User Responsibilities • Work at Height Regulations (WAHR) • Risk Management • Ladder Standards and classification • User Guide • Introduction to Safe Use of Ladders and Steps • The importance of being a Step Ahead • Taking care of Ladders and Steps • Appendix
To be a step ahead, the Code of Practice recommends that you ensure:
• Steps to eliminate or minimise risk have been taken • Work has been correctly organised and planned • The site is suitable for the task • The duration of the task is suitable • The correct equipment has been selected for the task • The people carrying out the work are competent in the use of ladders or steps
Although a stand alone document for users, employers and health & safety professionals, the Code of Practice is not intended to replace training, but is rather a supplementary resource for delegates who have attended Ladder Association training courses. The Ladder Association has a nationally accredited training scheme for users, inspectors, supervisors and managers which can only be obtained through Ladder Association approved training centres. The new Code of Practice costs just £5.00 and can be obtained from our online shop.
