CHANGES TO ONLINE TRAINING REGISTRATION SYSTEM

The Ladder Association has transferred the production of its LadderCards and Certificates!

New and improved system is now live!

Approved Training Centres should log onto the new an improved online registration system at http://training.ladderassociation.org.uk.  Please ensure that you and any of your staff who are involved in Ladder Association registration update your link.

The new training registration system will also require that all training courses are booked onto the system in advance, to allow for more effective auditing control.

The new LadderBook from the Ladder Association:

2009 edition offers more top tips on ladder safety and

best practice

Ten things you need to know about ladders, how to keep them in

good working order and how to apply the Ladder Association’s STEP

methodology, are just three of the updated sections in the association’s

new 12-page LadderBook sponsored by HSS Training.

Containing a foreword from Alison Wellens, head of the HSE’s Slips,

Trips and Falls Team, and an interview with Geoffrey Podger, chief

executive of the Health & Safety Executive in which he confirms that

ladders are not banned, the LadderBook takes as its theme ‘If it’s right

 to use a ladder, use the right ladder and get trained to use it safely’.

Ladder Association signs up to the HSE Pledge

The Ladder Association is now a signatory to the HSE Pledge. As such, the association undertakes to play its part in reducing the numbers of work-related deaths, injuries and ill-health in Great Britain. In particular, the association is pleased to commit to debunking myths around health and safety that trivialise the impact of injuries, ill health and death on individuals and their families.

Comments chairman of the association, Don Aers: "Ladders and stepladders have been especially susceptible to myths and misconceptions, so the Pledge has particular resonance for the Ladder Association. By engaging with this important HSE initiative we have an additional opportunity to advocate our central message - if it's right to use a ladder, use the right ladder and get trained to use it safely."

MAY CONTAIN NUTS

BBC PANORAMA PROGRAMME BROADCAST MONDAY, 20 APRIL 2009

STATEMENT BY THE LADDER ASSOCIATION

 It is perhaps not surprising that a programme titled May Contain Nuts would take a cynical view of health and safety in the UK today. This despite the fact that 12 people were killed in ladder-related incidents last year and the lives of their families and friends changed forever. The training course featured was not a Ladder Association training course, but despite that fact, the way it was portrayed shows how easily programme makers can manipulate words and pictures to suit their agenda.

The Ladder Association has long advocated the need for professional training and continues to do so. A contractor using a different piece of equipment, for example a cherry picker or mobile access tower, would naturally look to train his staff, so what is different about ladders? As chairman of the Ladder Association, Don Aers, regularly comments: “We all think we can use one, but it is surprising the number of people who have been using ladders, including the hardened 20-year user, who come away from a Ladder Association training course having learned something new. Knowledge or information that may prevent injury or worse in the future.”

The message from the Association remains clear - if it’s right to use a ladder, use the right ladder and get trained to use it safely. The HSE’s ongoing ‘Shattered Lives’ campaign highlights the consequences of a fall from height. More attention to that might have produced a more aptly named Panorama: May Save Lives!

Inspection is a Key Theme for 2009

Inspection is such a crucial component of ladder safety, it has been chosen as one of the association's key themes for 2009. According to Ladder Association chairman, Don Aers, maintaining ladders in good working order requires:

- Pre-use checks by the user;

- Detailed inspections;

- Maintenance.
