The Ladder Association was saddened to learn of the death of a worker who fell from a ladder while working for the Bus Company, Go Ahead London, which was fined £600,000 for neglecting safety procedures.
The worker was using a ladder to access the top of a fuel tank when he fell two and a half metres, suffering fatal head injuries.
“It is a terrible incident that should have and could have been avoided,” Chairman of the Ladder Association, Martin Brooke, said.
“Organisations have a responsibility to make sure that their workforce and contractors return home safely every night. Whilst ladders are commonly used and can be a perfectly safe piece of equipment for low risk, short duration work at height – users must be given the correct training and supervision, to minimise the risk of an incident occurring.”
The Ladder Association can offer guidance on ladder safety and operates a national training scheme, available through a network of approved training centres, on the safe use of ladders and steps.
