Our Executive Director, Peter Bennett OBE, continued to fly the flag for ladder safety when he appeared recently on the ‘Professional Builder’ podcast.
Hosted by Lee Jones, editor of the popular and well-established SME trade magazine, Peter introduced the Ladder Association and how we support businesses of all sizes to stay safe when working at height.
Peter highlighted the HSE’s latest fall from height accident statistics, noting the under-reporting of workplace accidents particularly by the self-employed, while addressing why work at height is still a source of so many injuries and fatalities.
He went on to outline the simple steps tradespeople can take to stay safe when using ladders; using safe equipment, carrying out a risk assessment, planning the work properly, and making sure you’re trained to use ladders safely.
Lee was keen to hear more about our ongoing ‘Step Up to Safe Ladders’ market surveillance campaign, and how our product testing has highlighted a significant number of ladders sold by some of the country’s biggest online platforms, fall well below basic safety requirements.
Peter wrapped up the discussion by offering his tips for making sure builders buy safe and compliant ladders, specifically to research before you buy, check product certification, and of course, buy from a Ladder Association member.
